Choosing a Renfe ticket is not only about finding the right departure time.

Depending on the train and fare you choose, you may have different options for flexibility, seat type, changes, cancellations and onboard services.

But there is one important thing to understand first: Renfe no longer uses the traditional Turista and Preferente class system for its main long-distance services. Instead, travellers can choose between different fare options and, in some cases, different types of seats.

So, what should you choose?

Renfe ticket options at a glance

For AVE and other eligible long-distance services, Renfe currently offers three main fare options:

  • Básico – the simplest and usually cheapest option.
  • Elige – more flexibility and the possibility to choose between Standard and Comfort seating.
  • Prémium – the most comprehensive option, with Comfort seating and additional benefits.

Not every Renfe service offers all three options. For example, the structure differs for Avlo, Avant, Media Distancia and Cercanías.

What is the Renfe Básico ticket?

Básico is Renfe’s entry-level fare.

It is designed for travellers who know their plans and are mainly looking for a straightforward train journey.

The ticket includes a Standard seat, with reclining seats, a reading light and a power socket. Changes are possible under the applicable conditions, currently with a €10 fee plus any difference in fare when changed at least 24 hours before departure.

Best for:

  • Travellers with fixed plans.
  • Shorter journeys.
  • Those prioritising price.
  • Passengers who don’t need additional flexibility.

In simple terms: choose Básico if you want the essentials and your plans are unlikely to change.

What is the Renfe Elige ticket?

Elige gives you more flexibility than Básico.

One of its main advantages is that you can choose between two seating options:

  • Elige Estándar
  • Elige Confort

The Comfort option provides a larger seat and more space. Renfe describes Comfort seating as a 2+1 configuration on many trains, although configurations can vary by rolling stock.

Elige is particularly useful when you want to personalise your journey instead of paying for a fully inclusive Premium option.

Best for:

  • Travellers who want more flexibility.
  • Longer journeys.
  • Passengers who want to choose their seat type.
  • Travellers who want to add specific extras according to their needs.

In simple terms: Elige is the middle option for travellers who want to balance price and flexibility.

What is Renfe Prémium?

Prémium is Renfe’s most comprehensive fare option.

It includes a Comfort seat and comes with more generous conditions for changes and cancellations. On eligible AVE and Euromed services, it can also include onboard food and drinks served at your seat.

Renfe describes Prémium as an option designed for travellers looking for greater comfort and flexibility.

Best for:

  • Long journeys.
  • Business travellers.
  • Travellers who value flexibility.
  • Passengers who want additional onboard services.
  • Anyone who prefers a more comfortable seating option.

In simple terms: choose Prémium when comfort and flexibility are more important than getting the lowest possible fare.

Standard vs. Comfort: what’s the difference?

This is where the Renfe system can become confusing.

The fare and the seat are not exactly the same thing.

On eligible AVE and long-distance services:

Básico → Standard seat

Elige → Standard or Comfort

Prémium → Comfort seat

Standard seats generally use a 2+2 configuration, while Comfort seats offer more space and are generally arranged in a 2+1 configuration, although the exact configuration depends on the train.

So if your priority is simply having a comfortable seat, you don’t necessarily need the most expensive fare: Elige Confort can be an alternative to Prémium when you don’t need all of its additional benefits.

Which Renfe option should you choose?

The easiest way to decide is to think about what matters most to you.

Choose Básico if…

Price is your priority and your travel plans are unlikely to change.

Choose Elige if…

You want more flexibility and the ability to choose between Standard and Comfort seating.

Choose Prémium if…

You want maximum comfort and more comprehensive flexibility, together with the additional services included in the fare.

What about Avlo?

Avlo is Renfe’s high-speed low-cost service and works differently from the AVE fare structure.

Renfe’s current regulations describe Avlo as having Básica as its base fare, with different optional supplements and conditions depending on the service.

So don’t assume that the fare options available on an AVE train will also appear when booking Avlo.

Always check the conditions shown for the specific train you’re booking.

Do all Renfe trains have the same fare options?

No.

This is one of the most important things to remember.

Renfe’s Básico, Elige and Prémium structure applies to specific long-distance services, including AVE, Intercity, Euromed and Alvia, while other services such as Avlo, Avant, Media Distancia and Cercanías follow different fare structures.

This is why the best option depends not only on your budget, but also on which train you are taking.

A simple way to think about Renfe fares

Instead of asking:

“Which class should I book?”

A better question is:

“What do I need from my ticket?”

If you mainly need a seat and a good price, Básico may be enough.

If you want flexibility or a choice of seating, Elige gives you more control.

If you want the most comprehensive experience, Prémium offers additional comfort and services.

That makes choosing your Renfe ticket less about finding the “best class” and more about finding the right combination of price, comfort and flexibility for your journey.

Final thoughts

Renfe’s fare structure gives travellers different ways to customise their journey. The key is understanding the difference between the ticket you buy and the seat you travel in.

Before booking, compare the available options for your specific train and consider how important price, flexibility, space and onboard services are for your trip.
